The IOL-Vip System ® by LenSpecial

Person with a visual reduction due to irreversible retinal damage (scotoma) are defined "Visually Impaired". The scotoma may involve only the central part, or be split into many small scotomas. Patients with damage in the central part of the retina (eg macular degeneration - DM) actually loses the ability to be autonomous in reading, writing and driving. Patients with damaged in the periphery part of the retina has a restricted field (eg in retinitis pigmentosa - RP), which don't allow them to moving safely. Patients with widespread damage (eg in diabetic retinopathy - RD) are subject to inconveniences in all situations for the lack of control over the environment around them.

The DM, in particular, affects mainly older people (in this case DMS) statistics report that 3% of the population is a carrier of low vision and that over 85% of them has a DMS. Moreover, older people are subject to the sclerosis of the lens (cataract) which invalidates their vision. In these cases of cataract and DMS, the simple removal of the cataract with an artificial lens implantation standard does not always allow a functional advantage.

LENSPECIAL has developed a system composed of a "package Low Vision Rehabilitation and Surgery". This package includes a software expert (SAVA - Software for Automatic Visual Assessment), two intraocular lenses (the IOL-Vip System ®), a mortgage IOL-Vip ® (for the tests pre-surgery) and a comprehensive rehabilitation program. This unique system provides a targeted selection of eligible patients, selected from those with stable macular degeneration, determines the orientation of intraocular lenses (in order to "build" a prism that diverts the light beam to the periphery of the scotoma) and the rehabilitation program. The rehabilitation program begins 15 days before the operation and ends three months after implantation. The exercises are collected in a file that can be used at the clinic or at the patient's home.
